I'm happy to announce that I will be taking on more photography jobs in 2009 as I'm going to slowly seperate myself from all of the other distractions that keep me from shooting full-time.

I had the opportunity to take some amazing shots of my best friend's baby girl Caroline. They really turned out great! It's amazing what you can do with a giant softbox and a white roll of paper. Caroline wasn't quite sitting up yet but she had this really cool boogie board move that made for some hilariously good photographs! Congrats to Caroline's mother and father who are getting married this weekend... Oh, guess what, I get to relax and be a part of the wedding. No work for me!

Day at the Park

I get a lot of questions about lifestyle photography. I guess I've honed my skills by shooting weddings. In most cases, when I'm running around the house or the park in this case, I photograph what I see and find visually pleasing. Of course, my son will always be visually pleasing to me!!! I love shooting with a fast lens (a 1.8 or lower) and kind of observe. Kids are so curious about everything and that makes for a great lifestyle photo session. You can pick up some decent "fast" glass for a reasonable price. If you're shooting with a Rebel or 40D series you can get into a 50mm f/1.8 for under $100 and with the chip in those cameras the lens is actually an 80mm. This is a great portrait lens and allows you to really open up your aperture and get that super shallow Depth of Field... a photographer's best friend!

I'm working on putting together a photography class here in the next few months. Let me know if any of you would be interested in an affordable way to learn some of the basics and some more advanced photography, nerd stuff. I'd love to know how many of you would go for something like that. Ask around. Have a great week!!!

I'm terribly sorry to announce that I will no longer be doing work for friends at a discounted rate. The headache that comes from offending your friends over money kills me. I love all you guys and want you all to have great photos of your kids and your families. At this particular moment in my life I can't afford to work for 1/2 off. I hope one day that I will be able to shoot for all of you and not charge you a dime!!! This has nothing to do with any one situation, I just don't want to lose any good friends over a business transaction that doesn't seem fair to one of the parties involved.

I have a business to run. My true friends want to see me succeed and those of you will understand. Love you guys!

Sunday Boost of Confidence

So many of you may not know that I am a drummer... not as much of one as I used to be but I have the pleasure of playing with some killer musicians at church. This Sunday was particularly nice. My brother Josh, Tom Jackson and my future brother-in-law Andy were all on stage with me. The music sounded so tight... it really engaged me to worship while I was playing, this doesn't often happen. Typically I'm so worried about certain changes that we've concocted in rehearsal that I miss the whole point of being up on stage.
I've received some nice compliments of the years but last Sundays takes the cake. I was packing up my gear when a boy, about 12 yrs. old, walks up to me and says, man, great drumming, I love it when you play. Who would have known that he even notices a difference between me and the other drummers that play on Sunday. So, every Sunday morning when I want to sleep in and take a day off this will certainly drive me to get my butt up and connect people to Christ!!!

Oh yes... another wedding, and what a lovely wedding it was. Not much to say, used some different techniques and really opened up my lenses. 99% of this wedding was shot at 2.8 and below. Enjoy!

Nothing quite compares to a hot smelly Trolly, but the red inner walls were amazing to shoot against. I love the contrast... beats a limo anyday!

The DJ at this particular wedding catered to the photographer in a different way than usual... LIGHT! Most DJ's give me the layout of the night and what they're going to do but don't ever consider to ask me for the one thing that can make or break my reception experience. Kudos Mr. DJ!!! Just a couple grungy effects... A little juxtaposition never hurt.

Wine glasses full of the yum yum. I was walking by the table as the waitress was setting them up. I was blown away by her attention to detail. She was spacing the glasses so perfect I had to get some shots.

I would have never thought of renting a lens... but now that I'm shooting so many weddings and supporting my family it's hard for me to buy the tools/toys that I need to get the results I really want to get. I have stumbled upon a company out of ATL that rents just about every Canon lens ever to hit the market. I can't wait to get my hands on this lens for my upcoming wedding this weekend. Talk about possibilities! For a photographer a fast lens like the EF 85mm f/1.2 L II is an essential "available light" lens. I love shooting with my 50 f/1.4 but it's no 85mm. We'll see what comes of this $100 rental for the week, good things I hope!!!

Adobe... Need I say more?

So, I can't say my life is complete... but my job sure might be. I downloaded the newest release of Lightroom (2.0) Beta test today. I cannot believe how far this program has come. If you are unaware of what the modern day wedding photographer goes through, I'll shed some light.

I show up early in the morning... Snap off my first 500 photos hanging with the Bride and her girls getting ready and doing what it is they do to prepare for the biggest day of one of their dear friends lives! I download the card before arriving at the Ceremony and start over fresh. By the end of the day I have 1500 or so photos to edit and prepare for the newly married couple when they return from their honeymoon.

With Photoshop it was impossible, with early versions of Lightroom it was doable. Now, it's on... If I could shoot two weddings a day I would but there some issue with me being one person, or something of that nature.

I can't wait to put this program to the ultimate test, but the day is upon me very soon... this weekend in fact :) Adobe, keep doing what it is you do to make our lives and jobs more efficient!

So I'm a nerd, Shut-up!

It's been far too long!

I've been really bad about posting lately... I've been so busy shooting that I haven't had time to do the important stuff like keep everyone updated on my life, my family, my work and all that jazz. Kayla is currently working towards her Vet. Tech degree and scored a perfect 100% on her first Anatomy and Physiology exam!!! Jace is so close to crawling it's annoying... Not in a bad way, in a way that we are so excited we just want him to take off and do it already!

Wedding Season has started and Seniors are scrambling to get their photos for their graduation announcements. I recently had the opportunity to work with a Christian Solo Artist from Nashville, TN. I shot his promo photos and designed his CD Album Artwork. What an experience...

I hope to put a photo post up soon.... well, maybe I'll throw one of Jace up on this post, I'm tired... OK, let me dig through the archive... There's one.

My sisters boyfriend is a musician in town and his sister is a singer songwriter in Atlanta, GA. We were able to use a building that my family bought about 3yrs. ago to convert into a photography/audio recording studio... we're still a couple years away from finishing her out right but it will be done!!! It's hard to believe but our little man will be 4mo. next weekend :( It's hard to explain but it feels like he's been here our whole lives but doesn't seem like he should be 4months already. He is quite the little talker. My mother bought him a little lay on the floor play station with animals hanging from it. Kayla will lay him down there and he'll just talk and talk to his little animals! He's hilarious! Looking forward to the crawling and the walking. He can hold off on the talking for a while!

So as explicit as it may be, my bro left a CD in my truck the other day that has completely blown me away. Say Anything's "In Defense of the Genre" album is some of the best song writing I've heard in a long time. The lyrics are a bit confusing and vulgar to say the least but the song writing is down right amazing. The music is so eclectic it will almost drive you nuts. From "Metal" to "Broadway" it is absolutely amazing. Check it out if you're up to it but be ware of the rawness of every track. Killer album! It really drives me to be a better drummer and musician.

New StraightLine Catalog Complete

Over the past few months we have been working on a new catalog for StraightLine HDD in Yoder, KS. I know what you're thinking, "the last couple of months!!!" I was in charge of not only the design but of every single image that went into the 32 pages. This means every product shot, every live manufacturing shot, every last detail was shot and designed by yours truly. This is a very pain staking process!!! Low and behold it is done and was excepted very well in the Directional Drilling community. StraightLine took the catalog to ICUEE, the largest construction trade show in the states, and had great response from them. Hallelujah!!!! We're done!

Canon drops a new Prototype. 200mm f2.0

For a wedding photographer this lens is an essential tool for the bag. Nikon has had this lens for quite some time now and it's always hurt my brain trying to figure out why Canon hasn't pushed it into production. Well, it's close to being here... I'll have to find a second job to pay for it, if they price it anything like Nikon this bad boy will be 4k!

Playing Catch Up.... My Perfect Life.

As I mentioned a couple of entries ago.... I'm new to this so I'm kind of playing catch up so I can get on track! My wife, Kayla, and I had our first child on July 24 and have been overwhelmed by the amount of love we both have for him. I may be a little excessive in my memory capturing but Jace has a library all to himself on the "BIG" hard drive on my computer :) I used to hear people talk about how they love their kids so much and they bring them so much joy, but you never really understand that until you have one of your own! I have to hand it to Kayla, she has him all day and is so beat when I walk through the door. God has blessed us with the opportunity for her to be a "stay at home" mom and we are loving every minute of it. This Blog will more than likely be a shrine to Jace so we might as well start it now!

OK, Call me old fashion or just reallllllllly behind. This, right here, is my first ever blog entry.

Over the last few months I've had so many things going on outside of my natural, "Wichita, KS" environment that I have decided to start a blog for my friends and family to keep closer tabs on me.

Here are some of my latest wedding photos. Over the weekend of the 20th, my wife, son and I packed up and headed down to Orlando to shoot a beautiful wedding on Lake Buena Vista. We arrived back in Wichita on Monday and I promptly jumped on a plane to Cancun, Mexico. I arrived in Cancun, took a short 45 min. shuttle down the road and shot an absolutely gorgeous wedding in Playa del Carmen. I want to extend a special thanks to the Strohl's and Bottenberg's for all the hospitality and taking such good care of me. I'd also like to thank the Brown/LaRou families for their wonderful accommodations in Orlando!

Thanks again to everyone that took the time to fly down to Mexico and make the wedding such a wonderful time!
